Psychology: Is an inability to write a coherent sentence an indication of an underachieving mind? Geoff: I am not talking about spelling mistakes, we're all at the mercy of the cruel goddess of typos, not to mention the fact that I am very much aware of the vagaries of dyslexia and wouldn't for a moment question the mental faculties of those affected by it. I am talking about a sheer inability to string words together into a sentence. They throw a load of words (most of which they evidently don't understand) into a post and hope it comes out comprehensible. At what point do you have to tell them to stay in their lane? Tell them to stick to talking about sport with their friends in the pub and not to trouble intelligent people who are far too busy to teach them what their parents should have done? I'm not suggesting these are bad people (although they seem to be easily led down a bad path) or that they are somehow less worthy than the intelligent people. Just that they should recognise their lane and stay in it. Otherwise they are merely pigeons playing chess. //Edit - Removed a typo. See. Contrast that to "All your base are belong to us" which is funny but everyone knows what the hell it's supposed to convey. Just to point out it's not about spelling or grammar. It's about communication. I picked these old memes as example so I wouldn't pick on anyone, but there's sentences like the first all over wire's forums that make about as much sense. Often whole paragraphs of them.  Jare: Hmm. I am inclined to agree that, if someone is of average intelligence and also not dyslexic or anything, then the inability to string a sentence together would indicate underachievement and/or failings of educational system. Especially if one can recognize their sentences are poorly written and don't even care enough to correct it. That's just being lazy to acknowledge when one could improve and doing nothing about it. I also agree though that comprehension is most important, and people shouldn't be gauged by how they write and rather how they understand the subject presented.
