Fog Swept Glade: I was interested in the solar panels. Ok, nuclear is kind of new. A perpetual motion machine.

Do you mean as an individual, with a yard for tinkering, or as a group or society?

And what price should people pay for Solar Power, access to rivers and for burning anything they can and anything else?? Should it be related to the national oil or gas generated electricity??

The flying Squirrel: Poblem with Solar is your still got to be Connected to the Grid the way electricty companys have it set up , So if the Grid goes down it Automatily cuts off your Solar ,So its not feeding Elictricy into it m If there trying to fix the Lines or what ever

theHating: where i live, grid connection is not required. connecting to the grid helps to substitute some of the coal or gas used to produce power, essentially distribution of excess solar wattage across the grid. but if your solar panel get-up was done professionally, you would likely have a large battery bank that stores energy generated by your panels and feeds into the house main. so if the grid went down, your house main would still be able draw from your battery bank. there are usually switchboards for battery charging and output control so you can use varying amounts of energy from your solar array and the power company. this is pretty standard equipment, even in the late 80's, because panels were so expensive that most people were only able to afford maybe a enough panels to subsidize only a quarter of their power bill, nevermind forking out the cash for the battery bank.

The nukes went cross eyed like everything else run by the Government.

Home batteries would also have been used to save on off peak prices but before solar that market never really existed.

Angry Beaver: Number of Operable Reactors Worldwide
Around 11% of the world's electricity is generated by about 450 nuclear power reactors. About 60 more reactors are under construction, equivalent to about 15% of existing capacity. In 2017 nuclear plants supplied 2487 TWh of electricity, up from 2477 TWh in 20161.

The technology has advanced...

kittybobo34: We should have pushed Thorium reactors vs Uranium. With Thorium no chance of melt down and much less chance of terrorism accidents.

kittybobo34: I think given the right push that we could be energy independent and carbon neutral if we wanted to bad enough. We just have to get the Corporate special interests out of the way.

Corporate Special Interests means the people who did and will do the work you want for free.

Why don't you say " the Germans "?? They are the ones who have stopped all alternate industries because the Germans wanted to be in charge and not do any work.

kittybobo34: That makes no sense what so ever.
Corporate interests are the companies that are protecting their profits over the well being of the citizenry. And, who said it would be free. The government that is supposed to represent us (the citizenry) would be driving this...... The Germans?, what do they have to do with what we need to do in the USA.
Duhh, sorry I forgot you are not speaking from the USA. Your political point of view, is a bit different than mine

If you want something you will have to pay for it.

The "Corporate Special interests" in your view are the actual engineers and workers who have solved your problems up to now.

If you want something more then you must pay for it-- and pay for it from the "special interests" who have made it happen .

You want it for free , covered up , lied about and Nationalised from your old Corporations.

If you want something better you will have to pay more. And the people who have it might just say "Nah, Kittybobo. You are not nice so I won't sell it to you with your bad ideas."

And you you will have to go to all that trouble of fighting over oil, gas, Governments and Corporations because you wont stop going wrong. While everyone else has a nice time.

If you want Electricity from a company that uses some old water mills then you will have to pay more as it is more expensive to do odd things then do one big thing.

The idea of Alternative Energy is that it is different from the what the big companies use.
