I always said the way for America to build a base for it's electrical services was with 12 extra big Fast Breeder Reactors near the coast. The reactor could be part of a desalination supply that would provide over a million gallons of fresh water a day for next to nothing in cost. Nuclear Plants need a lot of water, and America needs fresh water. A major Nuclear Generation Plant with combined desalination could provide 2 million gallons per day for California. If the San Francisco to Las Vegas Maglev ever gets built water could be tankered at night time to Vegas for a fraction of the cost of conventional tankering. Maglev Tracks need little servicing and the cost per ton of cargo moved is only one sixteenth of regular rail freight. Add mineral recovery from the desalination sludge and California could have a new resource. Maglev Tracks are a chunk of change indeed. But passenger use by day, and freight hauling at night would cut into the initial cost of construction. Conventional tankering of water to Vegas would be prohibitive in cost. The water never left the cooling stream.
