blonde goddess: it must be very difficult for you at this time. try to get motivated otherwise there is a tendency to become isolated and increase the risk of depression.

Goran: Get yourself busy. Take the time to reflect and decide what you want to do next, take some classes and meet new people, go on a few road trips, catch up on things you never could while working, enjoy your time off
Don't replace work with TV or sitting at home. You will surely get depressed.

♥♥♥♥KittyCat♥♥♥♥
♥♥♥♥KittyCat♥♥♥♥: That's good advice - don't let the TV take you over. It will lead to worse times in the long run. I recently lost my job and had the exact same reaction as you. It really knocked me down and I found it very difficult to get back up again.

I have moved closer to my family, but I also got some medication and counselling via the doctor (which are all finished now). I have a new job (but I did spend at least three months without one). I am 100% happier now. Losing your job is awful but it is not the end of the world - I thought it was but I was wrong. Yes it will be hard to pay bills etc. but the world won't end I promise!

Get the support of family and friends is my advice, and don't be afraid to go to the dr for extra help too.

Take care and don't punish yourself about this. Things will turn around for you.

Serabi: You have a good reason to feel depressed. Don't feel bad about the depression, it's natural.

I usually have 3 bits of advice for my patients/clients:-
1) Start working for a welfare agency, no pay, but your self esteem will rise considerably.
2) Get 2 kittens, nobody can stay depressed with kittens and their antics.
3) Don't give up looking for a job, even if it is way beneath you. It brings in a little bit of money and keep on looking for something else. Employers are more likely to employ someone who is working than unemployed. It sounds odd but it is true.

I wish you all the best.

newfierivergirl: well...i am in that spot now! I recently closed my business, took me about 3 months to finally except defeat,I became a much happier person in way because I had less stress and more of my family,so I thought.I had a home based business so I just stopped doing.very happy to be domesticated again, spent the summer tending to my kids just being mom,and my wonderful husband was so happy to have time with me that wasn't stressing me out!he was watching my tears everyday. So everyone was happy to have me around including me,but...all good things are comming to an end I really need a job fast, bills are piling in 2 places now personally and the business bills.and I feel its all my fault if I didn't start a business we wouldn't be in such hard shape...and I can't find a job any where I live, very soon.My husband works very hard day and night and now I don't see much of him.it so sucks, well I do hope things look up for everyone!

Drac36: I know how you feel too. I've been a chef/manager for almost 20 yrs. When the factories dry up, so do food sales. I just lost a fat salary and have only started for a new restaurant, for next to nothing. This has eaten at me tremendously. Find little things every day to look forward to. It;s hard...your job is your sense of identity and purpose, not to mention means of survival and hopefully some prospereity. I try to be creative..started teaching music (I play guitar) anyhting I can do to keep money flowing and keep mtself from giving up. You're not alone...this is a bad time for alot of people, and I sympathize wholely.

kdhsalb: First, It is ok to feel like this. You have just lost a major part of your life. It's ok to take sometime and work through your feelings. Allow yourself this time, write how you are feel down on paper, just freely no sencering yourself. Get these feelings out of you, don't stuff them that well just feed the depression. Do this as many times as you need, also when negitive thoughts start become aware for them and stop them by changing them into positive thoughts, Yes, you have lost your job but maybe there is something ellse you are ment to do now. This is differcult but it can be a good thing if you can see it that way. this is a great oppounity for you to expore other choses. With depression you have to change how you are talking to yourself, which changes how your feel about yourself, which changes you actions and behaivor. Emotions are enorgy in morstion. YOu, have the right to feel, how you are feeling give yourself a break. You, will servie this. Keep positive, have more fun, laugh as much as you can, be kind to yourself. Take one-step at a time. Keep yourself around positive things and people, depression is contages so don't give yours anything more to feed off of. You, are ok and you have to power and all you need in yourself to work through this

I'll be sending you positive hope, take care of you

bazza67: sometimes things happen that are out of our control and we have to deal with it the best way that we can and if that means getting proffesional help so be it. i am not saying this without experience as i have lost my wife and two daughters to depression as when my wife got really down she drowned herself and my 2 daughters aged 3 and 4 so i have a bit of an idea of what i am talking about. if you feel down get help before it affects either you or the people that you love

MaryJaneLight: Depression happens... most people will experience it atleast once in their life.

Just remember that the feelings you have will eventually pass, and that that isn't who you are... I find a hobbie helps, something to fill your time with. I was unemployed for a hard 6 months, keep your head up

racerjon: Depression is a lousy feeling. I know exactly how you feel. The best thing you can do is find something you enjoy doing. I know that can be difficult when you feel like crap but you need to find/do something besides work at your new job and come home.

If it's bike riding, walking, jogging, reading or just listening to your favorite music, get involved in it. Most cities or towns have many things you can do that may seem trivial to you but could mean the world to someone else. If you have a VA hospital near you, go visit a veteran. Many of these service men/women have no family and to see someone come in just to say hi can brighten that persons day like you wouldn't believe. Same with nursing homes. Stop by and say hi. These people LOVE to have someone to chat with.

Volunteer doing something with a hospital. You will feel so good when you know you helped someone's day become brighter by just saying a few kind words. The more you become involved with something, the less you will dwell on how bad you feel. Also, if the depression gets that bad, seek professional help. This doesn't make you any less of a person because you had to reach out to someone else. I know this for a fact. I've been being treated for depression by a therapist for almost 15 years now. Good luck and feel free to write me anytime. I KNOW how you feel.

sillychild: talk to your doctor, he will likely refer you to a psychiatrist who can persribe you with a light antidepressant and a light to medium anti anxiety medication, you are on here asking for advice so you are already talking to people and thats half the solution.

good luck.

granny_nanny: I have been living with clinical depression for most of my life. They are making some remarkable anti-depressants these days. It takes a little trial and error for them to find the ones that work best for you. You may get lucky and hit on the right one on the first try, but if the first one or two don't give you results, don't give up. It may take a couple of weeks for you to notice the difference Once in a while I will have a mild reaction to one, such as my skin will feel kind of crawly. You will notice that the first or second day. Stop taking it and tell the doc. Just don't give up. Once you find the right medication for your system, you will feel much better. Good luck.

Gypsy: the loss of a job brings on anxiety.. planning your way out of it. you fall into a depressed mode when you start beleiving everything is beyond your control. We are all programmed to think big money. But you can start up your own business. there are lot of small jobs in any community that big thinkers miss .. or don't do well. for example. snow removal. for winter. takes a little tractor type. after 25 yrs you usually leave with some kind of pension the trick is to use it wisely. yard work is another small job. if you are a hard worker, you can make more than enough money to live on. Changes in life require planning not doctors to get over.

AretoNyx: Some times it is hereditary like many ways of such things. However there is more than one way depression happens and it is different for each individual.
What gets on my nerves are those that deny reality that depression exists and those with cure alls that are bogus such as a walk in the woods with smile. Some say the darndest things cluelessly.

All those comments about Robin Williams to who ever else but stigmas still exist sadly.
