i spend each waking moment of my life distracted

ColonelKusanagi
ColonelKusanagi: bouncing from one source of "entertainment." All the while i bumble along my mind on blur. i don't stop and really think anymore. just off the tv to cease the blaring commercials and left it off to inspire sleep. lord knows I'm tired and here i was headed for a cracked article. still processing things going on in my life but not respectful of myself enough to give it my full attention. I've done it before and said it before, giving up tv and getting up out and living. I'm neither here nor there at the moment and somehow i feel clear headed.

If i shouldn't stop this incessant thinking what should i do with it? I'm inspired to so many things but spread too thin I'll never get anything done. Focus and purpose are supposed to be present and occasionally they are but i consume far more than i produce and an end isn't anywhere in site.

I wanna complete this thought and so many others but I'm too tired to follow a straight line. I figured i could get some more perspective on it better here than scrawled in some beat up journal forgotten somewhere.

xanderiley: Pick three different activities.
Start with one, focusing exclusively on that _one_ activity, move to another when bored.
Repeat.
Occasionally you'll find one activity doesn't hold your interest on it's turn. Drop that out of the lineup, choose another that interests you more, drop that one into the lineup.

ColonelKusanagi: List of things to do:

xanderiley: I rock, if you rock the list.
List projects you want to work on, stuff that'll put a smile on your face.
And then, go out there forget about things that will still be there when
you need a break, and do the work that only you can do.
I used to think "But if I do this, I'll _miss_ something!" Which is bull.
The world will wait, and keep right doing it's thing, so you can do yours.
Only you can deny you your happiness.
So stop reading my drivel, log off and do something you'll love doing.
Because you need to rock.

Imperfect_Perfection: Meditation will help with your ability to focus and to strengthen your concentration. Also by remaining mindful of everyday tasks (staying present and noticing every detail of your current task.) you can train your brain to concentrate on one task at a time.

I agree with xander, that making lists can be very useful. Write out what goals you would like to accomplish. What can you do today, next week, within a month, by next year?

Maybe it's time for an entertainment break? Shut off the media and see what you can accomplish with all your free time!

ColonelKusanagi: hard to take a break from entertainment in the shower, but i did get the point the first time. meditation is not something made for me tho, it's recommended for my condition in general but it's more harmful than good in my case.

There are many different types of and ways to meditate. What have you tried? Why do you feel it is harmful for you?

Imperfect_Perfection
Imperfect_Perfection: When beginning to learn and practice mindfulness it is most effective to narrow our focus on some part of our present moment... such as, the breath. With narrow focus mindfulness, we then learn how to open our attention to other aspects of our present moment: body sensations, emotional feelings, and thoughts.
Mindfulness is not the normal default position of our attention. The default position is normally the thinking mind. The untrained mind is usually daydreaming, worrying, judging, and anticipating. Buddhist philosophy refers to this as monkey mind.
To be mindful is to be relaxed and yet still mentally alert. Concentration involves focusing all our attention on one thing. The more able we are to do this, the less room there is for other thoughts and distractions.
By paying attention to our present moment experience, deliberately and non judgementally, we take the reaction out of our thoughts.
Mindfulness is the ability to notice and pay attention to what is actually happening around and inside of us at each moment. It is like waking up to life. When we fall into a mindless state life can seem to become a blur, we notice less and take so much for granted. How often do you take time for the simple pleasures of everyday life? Like the warmth of the sun, a friendly smile, a small act of kindness, a refreshing shower, a soft breeze, a delicate flower. With mindfulness practice, we come to our senses and actually start to show up in our own life. Mindfulness develops attention, concentration, and the ability to simply be present. Rather than going somewhere to be someone and attain something, just listen, watch, feel and pay attention to the present moment experience.

ColonelKusanagi: i'm bipolar and dwelling is a chief concern. I'm overtly mindful it seems, based on Buddha's description. i take far too much time for those simple pleasures and taking more would be quite near impossible. thank you for the refreshing information.

Imperfect_Perfection: You are very welcome.
I still don't understand your reason why you feel meditation wouldn't be helpful. It could help you to regain more balance to your moods. Are you afraid of triggering a depressed mood instead of manic?

ColonelKusanagi: dwelling and obsessive thoughts are a symptom made worse by this cure. my moods aren't particularly unbalanced at this time even by normal standards and it's a balance i maintain, provided i don't do this. it's not so cut and dry as simply manic or depressed, hence why they changed the name. i prefer the original still because it gives people unaware a better idea of what they're dealing with when meeting one but misunderstanding is hardly avoidable either way.

Coffrey: Yeah, I totally know what you mean, I've been this way ever since I discovered The Internet; Home Version
I guess the key is to make productive use out of it. For instance, my "entertainment" is the news and forms of documentaries and sciency stuff, so not only are the whole idle mind thing taken care of, but you can learn something as well .

ainoko57: Distraction(s), if willed delieberately can be used as a useful psychological tool to rid oneself of the daily anxieties and pent up tension as a diversion from the stagnant or bad energy by doing something that is a constructive effort to add to something to our planet earth or to people and animals in general....I'm thinking about going to the Humane Society and get one of those abondoned or abused animals so that I will feel some satisfaction or gratitude for giving a home for an animal that will be loved and enjoyed for the rest of its' remaining life....just a thought....nothing more nothing less.....
