Breaking Amish...

~LoisLane~
~LoisLane~: I can not find a youtube for this show. Seems they have all been removed

I always thought the Amish were allowed to go out into the "other world" when they hit 18 or 21 yrs and get to experience what else is out there. Then, either make a choice to come back or get to leave the nest and make their life somewhere else.

What I did not know is if and when they do choose to see how the other half lives, they are not allowed to come back and they are shunned from their families. I think thats terrible. How could the parents think that they raised their kids with no morals or values and not trust them to be able to experience things and not make a judgement for themselves. What a shame.

The mennonites are a little different and actually use a few "materialistic things" from the "English people" is what they called them hahaha.. (was cute ) But the difference is they drive cars and what not where the Amish still drive horse and buggy .

Its actually not a bad show. Nice to see these kids enjoy things they didnt know about. Even simple sunglasses were a huge thing.

Poor kids, thrown into NewYork city of all places and then told "K go mingle and fit in" hahahaha

Edit, my sp right now ..jeez.

Corwin: Both my parents are Mennonite... which I guess makes me a pure-bred Mennonite.

When I've visited the small town of Steinbach Manitoba where they are from, I've had a good look at how they lived out there. They love wealth, they have big-screen TVs and drive expensive cars, and they buy their food at the grocery store.
The young boys like to play video games, and the girls like to hang out at the shopping malls, and wear the latest fashions, and enjoy having under-aged sex with boys out of wed-lock.
And you'd never see a Mennonite without their cell-phone.
The men like to drink and gamble and smoke tobacco.
But they all go to church every Sunday, so it's okay.

I tell you... a very strange and unique culture the Mennonites have... it's so nice to see a people preserve their way of life like that.

~LoisLane~: You know I actually thought you were serious for a minute lols.

I dont know about puppy mills and under -aged sex but I am only talking about the Kids in this new show. They didnt show to much about their families cuz the parents freaked out and didnt allow it.

I think the kids are enjoying themselves seeing and learning new things. Whats scary about it is how will some of the kids personalities be when its all over.

There was a Beautiful Dentist who helped one of the girls with some new teeth. She is 18 yrs and had all of them removed. , The Dentist was sooo kind that she gave the poor girl (who was in such pain because of her dentures that didnt fit her, now I know why she didnt smile much )... a New set of teeth for free. It was going to cost the girl 3000$$ and she just didnt have it. Its so nice to know there are still kind hearted people in this world willing to help out someone in need, no questions asked.

Corwin: No Lois..... every word I wrote is the truth. I'm not kidding around this time.

I really am the offspring of Mennonite parents who came from the little Mennonite town of Steinbach Manitoba.
I left out a few details though... the men do all drink and smoke and gamble, but they do it in small groups and in private so that others won't see them do it. Matt Groening, one of the creators of The Simpsons is Mennonite and makes jokes about this every now and then.

The town itself is dry, with no bars or liquor or beer stores, so they all have to drive 2 hours to a nearby French town to stock up (God forbid any of them run into each other while they do that).

I suppose all-in-all they are a very kind and gentle people, which is probably a result of the town's geographical isolation. But this isolation also led to a tremendous amount of inbreeding. In a town who's phone-book has only a handful of sir-names, it's pretty hard NOT to marry your own cousin. And keep in mind that this town of 15,000 was spawned from an original 200 Mennonites who settled there some 150 years ago. Inbreeding and incest was commonplace over those years.

This also led to a high rate of birth-defect. There is a care facility outside of town where all of God's horrible mistakes are kept. These abominations are shunned by their families and are never talked about... out of site and out of mind. This leaves a visitor to that town with the impression that they are a very beautiful people, very attractive and intelligent, and so much musical talent among the average town-folk. With the ugliness kept behind closed doors.
This care facility has over 3,000 residents... out of a population of 15,000... you do the math.

My own uncle was one of these shunned abominations... although it wasn't so much from the genes... my father (11yo at the time) accidentally ran over his head with a tractor when my uncle was 7yo. and his frontal cortex was scrambled. (He suffers from the worst schizophrenia imaginable.) But this was just a typical occupational hazard back in those days... they had enormous farms, and they would spawn many children to raise as laborers, and would put them to work as young as 5 or 6yo... and in my father's case even operating dangerous machinery. And any disobedience was corrected with extreme corporal punishment, and the same for any blasphemous questioning of religion.

Quite a beautiful and wonderful people I'm describing here, isn't it? With their greatest talent being keeping up appearances in front of others. It's no wonder I became an Atheist.

Of course times have changed, as I described in my previous post. Most of the Mennonite farmers traded their enormous tracks of land for wealth, as now with modern farming techniques and machinery, many thousands of acres can be managed with just a few hands. So they traded their heritage for a life of luxury in the burbs, but kept their religion, which is the only thing remaining that makes them Mennonite. Even their unique language of Low-German is becoming lost... it's not a written language, and the younger generations can't be bothered to learn, what with TV and the internet being their main language now. Although I'm sure that the tendency towards incest and corporal punishment still remains as well.

---------------

This is all true. If you like, you can copy/paste this to my wife Deb (MzDemeaner here on Wire) and ask her if I'm making this up. And I could tell you plenty more... I could write a book on the subject.

~LoisLane~: Easy there big guy....Its not that I "didnt believe you" in that way. I saw the and thought , ohhh okay he is joking cuz I was going to comment on you being mennonite.

To tell you the truth it doesnt sound that much different then other religions or groups or families for that matter. ESP back in the day they used to think being "blind or deaf" was an abomination and embarrassment and didnt talk about it and hid the poor people away.

I never knew they were shunned when they wanted to go experience the world. That to me was the only surprise, Oh and I didnt know they were not allowed to wear sunglasses either.

In the Show I am talking about *Breaking Amish* there is only one mennonite girl, the rest are amish. Its surprising tho how different the 2 are. Most think its the same thing "amish, Mennonite same thing". Pretty different tho.

As I said I am enjoying this show (so far) and seeing the different ways of living they have. For them to come an experience New York must just seem insane.

The one "rebel" of the group has just gotten a tattoo (hes in deep shit lols) YET he was on the girls back for buying sunglasses?

Has anyone actually seen This Show?

Corwin: I don't get too many channels, so I've never seen it, but I think I've heard of it... or something like it that aired some years ago. I'd watch it though if I got the station, it sounds interesting.

I think I can understand where the Amish stand on the whole "shunned if they leave" thing. I think they're just trying to preserve their culture. Some of my previous post shows how a pocket Mennonite culture basically vanished over four generations. I think without that strict isolation like the Amish have, they would disappear as well... and they surely understand this.

The Steinbach Mennonites had this isolation in their earlier days whether they liked it or not... geographical isolation, a community sitting alone in the middle of the prairie. But then came cars/rapid transit, phones, and television... that did in their way of life right there... the Internet was just one more nail in the coffin.

Zanjan: I think the Hutterites maintained their autonomy and colony success best because they evolved into gigantic commercial business operations. Where I live, they own huge tracts of the best agricultural land which they farm with the most expensive machinery on the market. They drive the very best trucks and vans too.

They live communally; children taught in colony schools, no further than grade 8. Occasionally, the colony will agree to send one of their brightest youngsters to university so he can become a lawyer for the colony.

In other ways, they're somewhat like the Amish, wearing 16th century style clothing which they make themselves. No TV/radio but they have phones and make lots of wine.

As with any colonization, inbreeding used to take its toll; they never bring their damaged children out into public so I have no idea where they put them. To resolve the situation, they send for a gaggle of bachelors from colonies in the states to woo the daughters - like a debutante's ball, without the music and dance. How fun could that be? Well, maybe the wine makes it interesting.

Yet I know of only 3 that have ever left the colony for good - 2 sisters who run a bakery store, and a guy who became a journalist; he published a book on his escape. Well, in his opinion, it was more like being an ex-pat. I think they were unusually brave, and fortunate to have some friends in town to help them.

Tight roots are hard to untangle, few can let go of their past. Plus, it's extremely difficult to make a break when you can't compete in the outside world.
