Unexpected Nerd.

Well, not that unexpected but I really enjoy it. My partner got me involved in a gaming group they are a member in during 2020. My boredom level was high-- i'm pretty sociable by nature, I wanted to get out, I wanted to talk with other humans, dance, drink strong drinks. Alas, the PLAGUE had a different plan.

So I accepted the invite and started playing Dungeons and Dragons, of all things. Over something called Roll20. The website handles the map, the characters, all the dice rolling. It's really clever. Almost optimized for D&D. AND free.

Oddly enough, I found out that I really loved it-- it's basically improv theater, standup comedy and goofy wish fulfillment all at once. In the past year, I played a female hobbit who got started out as a thief, took a lot of damage (losing a leg and an eye eventually) but ended up impressing the local king so much he gave my character the equivalency of a hereditary knighthood, several miles of land and some soldiers to collect taxes with. My Character promptly retired and set up a chophouse on the main highway, advertising farm to table cuisine and homemade ale. We DID collect taxes. Mostly honestly. My second character was much shorter lived-- a dark elf Sorceress. She was too weak for my liking and I kept putting her into danger. Not smart. My current character is a 7 foot tall Giantess called Ironhand. She has a giant iron hand that was blessed to add to it's hitting and damage factor. She's actually quite intelligent but hides that behind a facade of being a big dumb brute and hired muscle. I enjoy playing her.

I'm enjoying this so much I signed up for a game on Wednesday night using a different system, but it's just as much fun.

Who knew? This D&D thing has been an abject lesson about keeping an open mind about fun.
