Darling Buds of May: How many times is it appropriate to say “What?” before you just nod and smile because you still didn’t hear what they said?  artebiolpdfx: personally, I think it is rude to say 'what' too many times - if you didnt hear what was said you have to let the other person know by saying 'hang on a minute - what was that you said?' until you hear it right.. I wonder how much of conversations people miss from pretending they heard what was said because they didnt want to say 'what'?.. I think saying 'huh?' or 'excuse me?' instead of 'what' is best.  dr_frankenstein: I try never to say what unless uncertain of an object in a story.
