my boss tells me if any homeless people enter the store, that I should kick them out. I should say there is nothing here for you. I told him, im not willing to be rude to anyone, and given that i live 3 blocks from work, I know many of these people, i see them every day, and if i have change i give it to them. I say good morning when i see them. They are not living in a perfect world, but they are indeed people - I dare say many of them are kinder than my boss is. when i see one standing bent over from the waist and non functioning, I ask them if they are ok, and i guide them to sit down on the grass.

Isnt that our job as humans? to care for one another despite our troubles and differences? I think it is. and i understand that they may be a bother to customers but, really - tell them to go away they cant come in because there is nothing here for them?

I dont understand. this business is a seasonal one, they come into communities for holidays, make a fortune of off those who live in the area, and then leave - without making the community better than they found it. I dare say, they make it worse.

Can a business not offer the local homeless people a coffee from under a tent roof at the side of the building for as long as they are there? Can they not offer the many organizations a space near the building to assist those in turmoil?

Be it ideal or not, these people are our neighbors. they are those who have had a life of turmoil often through no fault of their own, sickness, clinical addiction, homelessness. Any one of us can be in their situation given todays world. Rent for a small place in Vancouver is 3K a month, in my area its 2k a month, does this seem acceptable? Can you not easily be in their place but for one slip or one bad person - like loss of job or renoviction or clinical addiction?

I dont care how sick or annoying they are, if you are a wealthy individual making gross amounts of money from the locals, i believe you owe more to society than to sweep others into the gutter. Its bad enough that they pay low wages and take take take from our neighborhoods.

at the very least, i think i need to tell them of their err and not partake. So i did. i said that i was not willing to push away my struggling neighbours and to tell them there is nothing here for them. and even if i was willing to do that, how long do u suppose my car would remain safe? I told my wealthy boss that i am not going to say that to people, and if a homeless person comes to the door i will radio him and he can deal with it himself, let him get his own hands dirty, I cannot be paid to do so.

Make the people in your life think, make them feel shame for making ppl disposable. I may have to work for a crappy wage at the moment, but my ethics are not part of the deal.
