johngumbs: The case of a young girl whose name was Theroigne de Mericourt. She was born Anne-Josephe Terwagne near Liege. She was a singer, orator and organizer in the French Revolution. Born 13th August 1762.
Her mother died when she was five years old. Sent to live with her aunt who did not want her; she sent the girl to a convent, then brought her back to live with her. She was treated like a maid.
Her father remarried and took her back. She did not get on with her mother-in-law. She went to live with her maternal grandparents. It wasn't good; she went back to her aunt. It turned out not being good. She decided to face the world on her own, and took any job she could find to support herself.
She was hired by Madame Colbert as her companion. Madame Colbert taught her to read, write, play the piano and sing. She now dreamt of becoming a singer. An English Army Officer seduced her and brought her to Paris with promises of marriage. He did not keep his promise. She was then kept by the old and unplesant Marquis de Persan, who showered her with expensive gifts and money(although she insisted she had eveaded his advances). Her reputation in pices and any hope of a respectable life gone.
