johngumbs: Bible note.

I was browsing through one of the books of Flavius Josephus, the Jewish historian. He said that Moses was born 170 years after the death of Joseph, and the it was four generations.

I work it out as being 42 years.

Matthew wrote that from Abraham to David is fourteen generations, and that from David to the Captivity is also fourteen generations. From the captivity to Christ is fourteen generations.

We know that the captivity took place in BC 586

If we multiply 42 by 14, we get 588. Take 586 away from it and we are left with BC2 which is the time of Christ. But there were four years missing. So if we add them, we would get BC 6.

ponit: Yossefus was dead wrong there: Yossef died in 2309 and Mosheh was born only 59 years later in 2368.

Furthermore, the anonymous author of the "Matthew" book was also dead wrong about there being only 14 generations "from David to the Captivity" because there were actually EIGHTEEN "generations"; and the "Captivity" took place in 597 BCE (not in 586), which was roughly 475 years after David's birth - a lot less than the 588 years produced by your fake "calculation".

You would do well to study Seder Olam, and also Professor Mordochai ben-Tziyyon's excellent review of Biblical Chronology which you can download from http://mordochai.tripod.com/bibchron.pdf

johngumbs in reply to ponit: There are many scholars who have been researching the bible, and have said that Herod died in 4 BC. The dates that Matthew gave work out at 2 BC for Jesus' birth, but you must understand that a mistake was made, by one of the those messing about with the calender reform, by four years, and it has never been put right.
