THE BEST GIFT EVER!

'...Good news...for all the people.' LUKE 2:10

For many people Christmas is a sad time. Author Jon Walker writes: 'I'm sitting in a fast food restaurant observing a young girl celebrating an early Christmas with her mother. Her presents are spread out across the booth and she just said, "I miss you, Mommy." "I miss you too, baby," her mother says. Beyond the booth...a woman casually but carefully watches them. Using my journalist's eye, I put it all together. The watching woman is a social worker supervising a structured visit for a mother and child who are doing their best to celebrate Christmas...a few minutes later foster parents arrive and take the little girl home. The mother leaves alone. There's a darker side to Christmas we rarely acknowledge. We create this fantasy that seldom matches reality, even in the best of homes...many Christmas memories are full of tension, not tinsel...the holidays are just another excuse for Mummy to get drunk, or Daddy to be with his new family...yet another reminder that the one we love is far away or perhaps never coming back...The suicide rate is extraordinarily high in December, depression as common as "Joy to the World", more people hurt at Christmas than we initially imagine. For those tired of the hollow hope and false fantasies of Christmas, the good news is, God is with us.' Jesus came to earth to 'bring...good news...for all the people', and regardless of your situation Christmas is the best gift you'll ever get, because: 1) It's the costliest you'll ever receive because it cost Jesus His life. 2) It's the only gift that lasts forever. 3) It's one you can enjoy for the rest of your life.

loveableangel: Six-Word Testimony

November 4, 2012— by David C. McCasland

Over the past 15 years, Dan Smith’s name and face have appeared on fliers in coffee shops, laundromats, and small businesses across New York City. The six-word slogan on each flier says: Dan Smith Will Teach You Guitar. The result is that Mr. Smith stays as busy as he wants to be, teaching his students how to play the guitar. Many enthusiastic students hang his fliers in new places. It’s their way of saying, “Dan Smith taught me guitar. He can teach you too.”

The pages of the Bible are filled with accounts of people telling what God has done for them. One of the most vivid appears in John 9 where Jesus encountered a man blind from birth and miraculously enabled him to see (vv.1-7). After repeated questioning by skeptical local religious leaders, the man could only say, “One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see” (v.25).

If you had six words to express what Christ has done for you and can do for others, what would you say? Perhaps, “Jesus Christ will forgive your sin,” or “. . . give you hope” or “. . . save your soul.” When Jesus has changed our lives, we affirm His power to do for others what He has done for us.

“I was blind, now I see.”
It is no secret what God can do.What He’s done for others, He’ll do for you. With arms wide open, He’ll pardon you.It is no secret what God can do. —Hamblen
We are Christ’s “letters of recommendation”
to all who read our lives.

loveableangel: Forsaken?

November 1, 2012

Our Daily Bread is hosted by Les Lamborn

READ: Psalm 22:1-8,19-26

Those who seek Him will praise the Lord. Let your heart live forever! —Psalm 22:26

Do you know which psalm is quoted most often in the New Testament? You may have guessed the familiar and beloved 23rd Psalm, but actually it is Psalm 22. This psalm begins with David’s poignant, heart-breaking words that were quoted by Jesus on the cross, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matt. 27:46; Mark 15:34).

Imagine the situation David must have found himself in that caused him to cry out to God in this way. Notice that he felt forsaken and abandoned: “Why are You so far from helping me?” (Ps. 22:1). He also felt ignored: “O my God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear” (v.2).

Ever been there? Have you ever looked up into the heavens and wondered why it seemed that God had abandoned you, or was ignoring you? Welcome to David’s world. But for every plaintive cry David expresses, there is a characteristic of God mentioned that rescues him from despondency. Through it all, David discovers that God is holy (v.3), trustworthy (vv.4-5), a deliverer and rescuer (vv.8,20-21), and his strength (v.19).

Do you feel forsaken? Seek the Lord. Rehearse His character. And “let your heart rejoice with everlasting joy” (v.26 nlt). —Dave Branon

Lord, sometimes I feel as if You don’t care about
my life. When those times come, please remind me
of Your character as You did David. Help me to
lean on You again and know that You are there.

Even when we don’t sense God’s presence, His loving care is all around us.

loveableangel: 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 – What Controls You?

Daily Devotional Bible Verse

“For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. (2 Corinthians 5:14-15 ESV)

When you wake up every morning, what is the first thing you think of? When you make a decision, what is the motivating factor? These are both important questions we should be asking ourselves. The Apostle Paul tells us what the answer should be if we are Christians, that “the love of Christ controls us”. This “love of Christ” is not a vague notion, but can be present in two ways: first, it is that we understand the love Christ had for us through his death. Second, it is that our understanding of his love brings us to love him, and then our love of Jesus controls us. It can be a struggle though, to envision what this love looks like. Often, when we hear the word love, we think of silly notes, bouquets of flowers, or even “puppy-dog” eyes for someone. But when we only think of love in this manner, we do it a great disservice. Especially considering we don’t always have intense emotions or feelings directed toward Jesus. Paul’s words today should help use to realize that this love is not simply a feeling for someone, but action that stems from our “abiding” in his love (John 15:9).

1. 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 – Through the Cross
2. 1 John 2:5-6 – Lights. Camera. Where’s the Action?: Walking Like Jesus
3. 2 Corinthians 5:16 – Book Cover Christians

Read John 15 today and meditate on two themes: what Jesus does, and who Jesus is. Remember, we don’t just love him because he saved us, we love him because he’s worthy.

loveableangel: Matthew 14:30-31 – Walking in Faith

Daily Devotional Bible Verse
“But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
(Matthew 14:30-31)

We have all dreamt of doing something great for God. These dreams might involve some form of sacrifice or great leap of faith. We see others around us who have sold everything to follow Jesus as a missionary in some far corner of the world and view them as a person of great faith, maybe even aspiring to be like them. Consider this, if we had been sitting in that boat with Peter we would have thought he was brimming with faith as he began to climb out of the boat and walk toward Jesus. But suddenly, something even stranger happened and Peter began to sink. That courage and faith he had in Jesus was getting smaller as he saw the wind and the waves getting bigger. A true measure of a person’s faith then is not the first step of their faith journey, but the subsequent steps thereafter. We deal with this every time we get excited about something, starting any given project only to stop halfway through because it was much more difficult than anticipated. The same thing happens when we believe Jesus would have us do something. But as we start doing it and it doesn’t turn out like we thought it would, or the ministry isn’t immediately growing we begin to sink, losing faith in and sight of Jesus. What we must realize is that if Jesus has called us to make a first step, then he will provide a path for each step toward him after that.

Where is Jesus calling you to walk in faith?

loveableangel: Heart Determines

It's ok to kiss a fool,
It's ok to let a fool kiss you, but never ever let a kiss fool you.

It's still best to wait for the one you want than settle for the one available.
Best to wait for the one you love than settle for one who's around.
Best to wait for the right one.
Life is short to waste on the wrong person.

It is better to meet the person who will truly love you later, than meet someone now who promises to love you but sooner or later leave you forever.

Never try to impress someone to make him/her fall in love with you.
If you do, you will be expected to keep the standard for the rest of your life.

Fate determines who comes into our lives.
But heart determines who stays!
