Phone Booth

I saw a phone booth on a Portland sidewalk
It loomed there, an aluminum monstrosity
A large, empty box, a metal husk
No innards, nothing left not even wires

No one saw it
But I that is, I saw the sad hulking thing
Impossibly large and impossibly invisible
My heart sank at the sight of it

It was a useless thing, that phone booth
Standing in the middle of the street
And I realized with abject horror and sadness
That I am that phone booth and that phone booth is me
