Holier Than Thou


Inspired, so-called revealed divine words of gods

Enslave humanity, animate laws and give examples

Of how the perceived morals of each man, woman

And child should be judged, rewarded or punished.


The ‘fables of historical invention’ designed as

Parables to illustrate those words, will teach us

What we need to know to be ‘holier than thou.’

But beware, they who insist upon obedience to

Those ersatz divine words have a sick agenda of

Control enforced through conformity of belief.


They, so-called ‘ones who have heard the call,’

And who are materially supported and profit by

Our worship of divine faiths, want us to believe.

But, it’s all just lies fashioned from whole cloth

To keep our offerings coming into their coffers.


Without embedded ideologies, most all human

Beings bear selfless motivation and goodness.

And, contribute to and depend upon others as

The best strategy to ensure collective survival.


Those rare members of our species who display

Genuine humility and compassionate concern

For the welfare of all are revered as righteous

By their gentle, fearless faith in the sanctity of

Non-violence, and generous, loving kindness.


Authenticity is the issue when a choice of who

Or what to believe and emulate is needed, as we

Seek to advance our journey’s way forward to

A destination that, finally, proves our earnest

Commitment to a life of success for ourselves.


We learn about the good in life with discernment

Using experience as we encounter it, as a mentor.

We trust the counsel of righteous ones, and study,

Seeking guidance for our life’s newly discovered

Ties to love, attainment, fear, anger, and losses.


Much can be learned using insight contemplations,

And wisdom seeking meditations to calm the mind,

And cultivate equanimity and the clarity of peace.


It’s easy to see, therefore, that wisdoms gleaned

From the lessons of trusted teachers, from books,

Or from those insights met through rigorous self-

Examination all have equal potential to guide us.


So, never believe anyone who says they are ‘holier

Than thou,’ because in reality, such claims are just

Spiritual sleight-of-hand tricks designed to play on

Our raw emotions for the benefit of the poseurs who

Prey upon seekers of comfort and reassurance for

Ego gratification, self-aggrandizement and profit.

Of course, if we look all around, checking

If safe from reckless injury before carrying

On, then surely we ‘get’ the potentials for

Absolute harm, awaiting infliction, hidden

Within the whirling whims of chance in a

Rash, mindless move or unlucky accident.


Not to mention, an insane suicidal absurdity,

Of profound dis-ease, called nuclear war.

And lest we forget, there’s global warming

To ignore, as preventable havoc abounds.


It seems to be and it seems to me, that it’s

Only brief matters of when, not if, we poison

Ourselves, irretrievably. Beyond that will lie,

No safe place for us to be, for many, long

Aeons of time to come, perhaps not to be

Had by us incautious humans ever again.


Won’t that be a long, cold pity? Often

Foreseen and forewarned, ever and again,

But stupidly, stubbornly, not foresworn?

War-riors, bravery, heroism, giving one’s all,

Winning or losing. Noble-sounding but corrupt

Lie-words used by media to wreathe the mindless

Sacrifice of life and limb youth has wasted on the

Old, since fear and the ideology of power were new.


When there is peace, none who crave power will

Make money, or can bully youth’s hopes for life

With calls to patriotism in defense of the nation.


Or add to their ill-gotten wealth from war-profits.

It’s an open secret that we’ve always known about.


How foolish we are to give old ideologues and war

Profiteers the mindless, noble sacrifices of youth

And hopes for good, full lives in war, yet again!
