(Post deleted by staff 3 years ago) FistOfStone: maybe interpret the quote this way: thinking of life as having a "purpose" is thinking of it as a means to some end, as though it were just a tool to perform a task ... whereas what gives life meaning is activity that is done for its own sake, not as a means to an end, activity that we find good, valuable, joyous ... it's only when we lose our lust for life that it starts to look like it needs a "purpose" ... then the solution isn't to give it one, but to recover the lust for life paganpoetry: I like how you see it, Fist. An author on NPR said something that I'm always echoing now, instead of "follow your purpose, follow your curiosity" and that seems realistic, for me. So now instead of wondering what my "purpose" is, I know to live a more present state, and have recognized a *few* things that are meaningful to me, like family, love, etc etc etc. FistOfStone in reply to paganpoetry: that's wonderful pagan ... i think the more we can appreciate the present moment without needing anything more than that, the more self-actualized we are ... in any case i'm glad you've recognized those things and i hope you have them and find them in abundance TJ_TANG: The present is the only time that actually exists. I enjoy listening to Alan Watts take on this. |
