Friends | I have always wondered why people shack up. Why they call the common law spouses partners. I don't understand why they think that getting involved with someone who is not interested on keeping a commitment, is in any way safer or more practical. But it is definitely more fashionable. When you "have union with" someone a commitment is made, as much as one tries to deny it. It is just practical to put it in a contract. Everyone who has these superficial relationships talks about how their boyfriend or girlfriend "cheated" on them. There is no cheating if a commitment has not been made. If no one ever promised fidelity then it should not be expected. If you want fidelity then you have to be willing to give it. There are many common law relationships that fall apart, some of them have children. The pain is still there weather the contract has been signed or not. Don't think that because you feel the promise has not been officially made that the pain of breaking it wont be there. I hear it all the time. "My ex can get hit by a truck","My ex can die" in so many ways imaginable. People get married because the contract is designed to protect you emotionally and all the others involved, like offspring. It is not natural to get involved in a relationship with the intention of causing pain. Don't think that by not signing a contract you are avoiding pain. pepperethel: I have always wondered why people shack up. Why they call the common law spouses partners. If you start out with a piece of wood that has had too many screws in it the furniture will be of questionable quality. The less screw the wood has had in it the better the quality of the furniture. A woman heart can be hardened by too much sex. So the less she has screwed the softer her heart may be. Soft women are more nurturing and caring than women that aren't. So she makes a better mother.
