View all 5 posts  Woodstock_: Because it controls the exhaust emissions and converts toxic gases and pollutants into exhaust emission. Otherwise without one your exhaust will come in thru the a/c vents and breathing carbon monoxide gas while driving isn't very wise.  Sir Loin: Catalytic converters were never needed. All that's needed is to make smaller cars with engines 1/5 the size of what's usual in USA and keep them properly tuned.
