Vultures Feast On A Possum (Photo Essay) WARNING! SIGNIFICANT "EWW" FACTOR !!!

A little bit into January, 2010 I came across a large dead opossum, his carcass out behind my barn next to a junk pile. I knew from experience that the numerous Turkey Vultures in the area would make short work of it.

Last spring I found a dead possum by my garage, but only because it had been hidden from view of the vultures under a tree, and the carcass had gotten old enough to put out a pretty strong stink. In that case, I used a shovel to carry the rotting carcass out into the open for the vultures to clean up. I was able to get some photos, which I posted in a May 1, 2010 blog entitled "Natural Drama #1".

stuckinthesixties

I realized, this time around, that I had the opportunity here to repeat this experience, but this time, to create a circumstance that would be particularly beneficial for photographing the drama. The carcase was a new one, only a day or so old, and in the dead of winter, still in good shape, not decomposing yet. So I moved it to an area near my house, where I would be able to subtly slide a door open a couple inches, and take photos from fairly close without spooking the vultures as they did their thing.

The photographic result is pretty interesting, though not pretty. Enjoy!

Around My Place VII

These are photos that I took on my property between November 25 and December 30, 2009. They were originally posted in my photo gallery, and then as space ran out, moved over here to this blog. The comments shown below originally were attached to those photos. In some cases, the comments are disjointed. This is because as people delete their WireClub accounts, their comments leave with them.

Picture #25: Mt. George and the surrounding hills
> Karma says December 27: I always think of the Bay Area as rainy. But your area always seems so brown and dry. I guess just by the coast it gets the rain.
> StuckInTheSixties says December 27: It's a seasonal thing. The rainy season goes from perhaps late October through early March. The rest of the year is dry. The green area in the picture is an area of my property that was mowed last spring as a fire-safety measure. Since it was mowed, the new growth brought up by rain is visible. The brown, dry vegetation in the foreground is the area that was not mowed. I leave a large section unmowed each year for two reasons: to save money on the hourly rate the mowing guy charges; to leave some habitat for various forms of wildlife, mostly to give a place for rodents to live, and for the birds that hunt them.

> Karma says January 04: It's used on a race track?
> StuckInTheSixties says January 04: Doubtful, Karma. One this old (I think it's either '64 or '65) and in this good of condition probably will be babied. But in years past, they certainly were used for racing. Especially street racing by drunken high school boys.
> StuckInTheSixties says January 07: I stopped and took the phone number from the "For Sale" sign and called the owner. It's a 1964. Asking price, USD $12,500. By the way, the interior of this thing is just beautifully restored, black leather tuck-n-roll upholstery, perfectly restored door panels, etc. It's a beautiful car.

Picture #30: I found this small, lichen-covered oak tree interesting in appearance.
> candyrivers says January 24: I love lichen - amazing stuff. Its a biological indicator of an acid rain free environment.
> Karma says January 24: I like this one a lot.
> StuckInTheSixties says January 24: The more I look at this picture, the happier I am with it. I was dubious about how it would turn out. The problem, as I perceived it, was that some of the shrubery and ground cover, and a few Eucalyptus trees in the background don't provide much contrast. You can see the green of the trees in the upper left contrast nicely to the light color tones of the tree. I pointed the camera from all sorts of vantage points trying to get the right shot, and this was the best I could come up with. But I guess it turned out okay.

Candy, if you like pictures of lichen, perhaps you'd like these three I took last year (copy/paste the links) :

As my Picture Gallery fills up and nears or reaches the maximum of two hundred images, rather than simply deleting older pictures in lieu of newer ones, I shift them over here to reside in blogs. This is a collection of various pictures and photos that don’t really fit in any of the specific categories I've used in the past.

I’ve also included the comments that were attached to them. Some of these comments will seem a bit disjointed because the continuity between comments has been interrupted as the people who left them deleted their accounts, taking the comments with them.

Picture #16: Cable cars on Powell St. in San Francisco (#1 of eight)
> StuckInTheSixties says January 17: These cable cars are stacked up on Powell street, awaiting their turn to be turned around at the turnaround (that's what it's called), so they can head back in the other direction and climb that hill in the background.
> _Safira_ says January 17: Busy, busy..is it lunchtime? And yeah I'd be catchin' the tram too if I had to go up that hill
> StuckInTheSixties says January 17: Actually, it was just a little after noon. The way these cable cars work is pretty interesting. Note the narrow slot between the two rails of the tracks. Below that slot is a mechanism of large pulleys with a steel cable, hence the name "cable cars." The pulleys and cables are always moving at a steady rate or speed. The operator of the car works a thing similar to a clutch in an auto in the way that it slowly grips that cable, allowing the car to begin moving, until it's moving fast enough for the clutch to grab solidly to the cable. Along with that clutch, there is, of course, brakes, as well. The hill you see is just the first one. There's a second hill beyond it about twice as high as that one.

Picture #17: Cable cars on Powell St. in San Francisco (#2 of eight)

> barnestorming_girl says January 17: wow awesome I have only seen this on the movies lol thanku darling I you
> StuckInTheSixties says January 17: I had gone into The City to see Avatar at the big IMAX theatre in the Metreon, and had a little time to get lunch beforehand. I realized that the Powell Street turnaround was right there, so I stopped to take some photos. It wasn't planned or anything. This turnaround really begs for some video.

> _Safira_ says January 17: Description please? Where is this and what's that round thingymajig between the 2 brown buildings on the right?
> StuckInTheSixties says January 17: This is a shot of Yerba Buena Gardens, taken from the Metreon (when I was there seeing "Avatar" at the big IMAX theatre), and some of the large buildings of downtown San Francisco. The round thing is, I think, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
> _Safira_ says January 17: Why thank you kind Sir..*curtseys*
> Karma says January 17: Nice

Picture #27: A vertical panoramic photo of Yerba Buena Gardens and downtown San Francisco

Previously Posted PrintScreens III

Below are PrintScreens that date from November 25, 2009 to January 18, 2010. They were originally posted in my photo gallery, and then as space ran out, moved over here to this blog. The comments shown below originally were attached to those PrintScreens when they were posted in my gallery. These comments, in some cases, may appear disjointed. This is because some of the people who posted them later deleted their accounts and their comments disappeared as a consequence.

> StuckInTheSixties says October 25: I'm a picture wh0re. I fill up my gallery and then shift all the pictures over to blogs. I have somewhere around a thousand pictures.
> StuckInTheSixties says October 25: You have a long way to go before you can catch up with ILustYou!

> thememoryflowered says October 30: That is a cry to be assasinated. Man these club junkies need to be kicked in the spine.
> StuckInTheSixties says October 30: As I've watched this dumbass trend of creating/joining clubs for the sheer numbers, I've seen numerous clubs devoted to how dumbass this trend is. Creating one of those clubs seems counter-productive to me. It just gives them yet another club to join.
> thememoryflowered says October 30: Amen brutha.

Yes, of course. It's also easy to simply click that little "X" to make the Home page reference disappear. I guess I'm just wondering how far it'll go. Actually, I would think that Admin has a finite amount of tolerance for this sort of thing, and that it's quite possible that these peculiar hobbiests will get deleted. If nothing else, it gives me something to PrintScreen and post, so I suppose it's a trade-off.
> StuckInTheSixties says October 30: It's a her. Abigail.
> veronica says October 30: Admin is but the Deus ex machina.
> StuckInTheSixties says October 30: veronica, you are SOOOO sexy when you speak Latin!

> barnestorming_girl says November 06: you darling
> Zhya says November 07: Huh, odd. Hope it's not contagious.
> StuckInTheSixties says November 07: The only thing contagious about Barnsie is her love. It's easy to become infected with that! No, that's not quite true. She can cause you to become nutty too.
> thememoryflowered says November 07: I woke up to a similar sight. I pray this is not going to become the norm.
> StuckInTheSixties says November 08; Her kids were gone and she was bored. It didn't help that her friends actually commented on these things (me included).

> StuckInTheSixties says November 14: Actually, I went in ... er ... uh ... I mean, in my place, I asked Biff to go in there and try to find out if, indeed, using the words "h0rny room" would trigger the spam-bot. I'll give Biff your ... um ... regards, atss! Perhaps you'll meet him and be able to decide for yourself if he's "totally dreamy." Maybe he'll cough-cough ... wanna ... uh ... Boff. (shrugs) Knowing Biff, he'll insist upon it.

Picture #08: Picture #1 of two
> StuckInTheSixties says November 29
These two pictures require an explanation:

I had come into a room created with Holly. Karma was in that room. Upon entering, my first line of text was making some sort of joke about the "H0rny" room. Even though it was a "free speech" room, the anti-spam robot ate my message. I was puzzled, and mentioned it to the room. There was no censoring of further uses of the words "h0rny room."

The next day, I again entered Holly's room. And remembering this, I again began my texts with a usage of the words "H0rny room". Again, the anti-spam robot had a meal of my text.

The room occupants were skeptical of my explanations of this. I began to experiment, and wanted to capture the proof in PrintScreens, but to no avail. The room mocked me. (laughs)

The next day, again, the scenario was repeated. But I had forgotten to save my initial text before sending it to the room. Frustration reigned. The mocking was merciless.

Finally ... finally, I managed to repeat the process, and here is the documentation. Karma will, of course, accuse me of doctoring these things with the Paint program. But on my honor, there's been no alterations. Thanks for humoring me.

> _Safira_ says November 29: lol sure SITS. I believe you...thousands wouldn't though
> StuckInTheSixties says November 29: * raises right hand * I do solemnly swear that the aforegoing ...

Picture #09: Picture #2 of two
> StuckInTheSixties says November 29: See previous picture for an explanation of this PrintScreen.
> barnestorming_girl says November 30: lmfao darling

Picture #10: In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, "... not that there's anything wrong with that!"
> Karma says November 29:
> cookiezzz says November 29: haha
> _Safira_ says November 29: What do you think of this shirt? Jerry doesn't like it.
> StuckInTheSixties says November 29: Hahaha! You've seen the episode!
> and then she said says November 30: Duh! Hello?! It's the *labyrinth* that's straight!
> StuckInTheSixties says November 30: Hahaha! I know, you SILLY! It just struck me as humorous for a gay man to use the word "straight" in his user name. I amuse easily. *plays with ball of string* Gack! I knew I'd get in trouble for this little joke!
> Rochy says January 04: lol @ "Can't find it?" hmm.. I WONDER why haha
> StuckInTheSixties says January 04: (laughs) Good one! A bit of happenstance humor I'd overlooked!
> CYCLONE_FAN says January 06: Im a seinfeld nut! Love it!
> StuckInTheSixties says January 06: I've heard Jerry Seinfeld talk about that episode. They were concerned that it might be taken as derisive to gays, and they certainly didn't want that perception. So someone came up with that phrase "Not that there's anything wrong with that," and then they realized that if they repeated it over and over and over again, not only would they really reinforce that notion, but it would also be very funny. Now that is what I call smart comedy.

Picture #11: Hahaha! I like your other picture better anyway.
> BiLLy says November 30: SiTS P.I
> StuckInTheSixties says November 30: She's just goofin' around. Me too. But Tineye is useful!
> Zhya says November 30: lol I've seen so many wirekids fake that girl that it's not worth reporting anymore.
> StuckInTheSixties says November 30: 132 results ... every one of them swears it's really her!
> Rochy says November 30: lol freaking Abi
> AMurderDivine says November 30: Ah Deanna Lenore...

> StuckInTheSixties says December 08
I just looked at these two people, and they struck me as being as diametrically different in every possible way as two people could possibly be. I looked at them, and I could just imagine how they would be utterly repulsed by each other. It cracked me up. But then, I amuse easily.
> StuckInTheSixties says December 08: Can you imagine them having s3x with each other? Hahahaha! Me neither!
> _Safira_ says December 09: The thoughts that run through your mind never cease to amaze me lmao ...and they're just the ones you tell us about
> lois_lane says December 09: I think its funny!!
> StuckInTheSixties says December 10: I'm sure they're both very nice people. But can you imagine them together? Can you see him chanting obscure spells in Latin with her in a room full of candles? Can you see her swilling Budweiser and headbangin' with him while listening to Anthrax?

> StuckInTheSixties says December 13: In my mind, he's writing a letter: "Dear Santa, I've been a good boy this year ..."
> StuckInTheSixties says December 13: Hahaha! I'm glad you're amused by my ignorance of your movie reference. Why don't you clue me in on it, ya twit?
> lois_lane says December 14: *Look Who's Talking Too*!! I was looking for exactly what was said but its hard to find!!lols

> barnestorming_girl says December 22: Oh darling I would of loved to come in there but I'm sorry I am cooking dinner!
> cookiezzz says December 22: lol stuck
> StuckInTheSixties says December 22: (laughs) I certainly didn't create it for any horniness, just to make the PrintScreen. Still, I have to admit to being at least a tiny bit disappointed that it was ignored so thoroughly. I would have thought somebody would have just entered out of curiousity.
> StuckInTheSixties says December 22: Damn! I'm realizing now this thing looks like a "oh, pity poor me" picture! Hahahaha! I just thought it was funny that the room sat there for over an hour without even one random Wireclub user wandering in. Kinda weird.
> _Safira_ says December 22: lol....now if Biff had made the room..I'm sure it woulda been overflowing
> Rochy says December 22: haha Six..just dont do what I saw the others doing when they were by themselves ok

> Rochy says December 22: idk about you but a guy that is 6'1" and 150 lbs. is not a lot of muscle..thats a skinny little tard that should get punched in the face for using that picture as his default then to have a room that says "girls only" damn lil boys.
> Raven says December 22: I second that!
> _Safira_ says December 22: lol...trying to show he has a 'soft' side. Hey..I have a pic like that...maybe I should use it too...never know..I might get lucky <<off to change profile pic and make a boys only room
> StuckInTheSixties says December 22: Somehow I doubt that would have the same effect, Safira!
> Karma says December 23: I think the profile belongs to the baby.
> StuckInTheSixties says December 23: If so, she could get banned. It's an adult-only website.

Picture #17: Zhya and I are different versions of the same ... something ...
> RUBY says December 30: yeah they do look like

Picture #18: She's probably gonna hunt me down and kill me ...
> sweetnsassygal77 says December 30: lmao woohoo so i'm not the only one that had that many pics lol!!!
> StuckInTheSixties says December 31: Hahaha! I always keep my eyes peeled for that "69 Pictures" thing. I've victimized a few of you now.
> _Safira_ says December 31: you missed me!! lol
> StuckInTheSixties says December 31: Had I seen that number on your profile, I'd have done one of these for you too!

The Concert Was Cancelled, Part One (Photo Essay)

A few months back I took the hour plus drive into San Francisco to attend a concert. At the time, the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge was shut down for repairs. This bridge is the main artery for commuters coming into The City, and its closure caused havoc for the traffic as drivers were diverted to other routes, including the Golden Gate Bridge, which I used.

Because of the traffic situation, I was forced to make the drive at a much earlier time in order to avoid a crushing evening commute and to be sure I wouldn’t be late for the 7:30PM start of the concert. Therefore, when I got into The City, I had several hours to kill. It was a warm, sunny autumn day, and I took my camera to shoot some pictures while I waited.

Unfortunately, unbeknownst to me, the concert had been cancelled. The day wasn’t a complete waste, however, as I came away with a bunch of photos. I took them in two basic locations (both near the concert venue): the Golden Gate Bridge, and Marina Green. I’ve split the photos into two groups accordingly, thus this blog comes in two sections.

Yet Another Vineyard, As The Seasons Pass By (Photo Essay)

This is the last set of photos I have showing a particular vineyard as it went through seasonal changes of 2009. It's quite close to where I live, only a few minute's walk away.

Luna Vineyard, Winery And Tasting Room (Photo Essay)

It's been a little while since I posted one of these photo essays of vineyards here in the Napa Valley. I have a couple saved up, that I didn't get around to showing before. Here's one of them. This is Luna, a typical combination vineyard, winery and tasting room. It's right down the road from me. I pass it almost daily on my way to and from town.
