Around My Place XIV

These are photos that I took on or around my property between February 5 and April 13, 2011. They were originally posted in my Picture Gallery, and then as space ran out, I moved them over here to this blog rather than simply deleting them to make space for new pictures. The comments shown below originally were attached to those photos. In some cases, the comments are disjointed. This is because as people delete their Wireclub accounts, their comments leave with them. Note: After putting this blog together, and before deleteing these pictures from my Picture Gallery, I decided to leave Picture #01 in my Gallery, along with the other occasional pictures that remain there permanently. So it will reside in both places. (Hey, it’s a good picture!)

Picture #01: Blacktailed deer (a doe, of course)
> SABLES says February 05: omg you could almost reach out and touch her!
> StuckInTheSixties says February 05: She was VERY close. I was on my way to town, in the car, driving out of the property. There were about seven or eight deer hanging around. I could see them up ahead of me, so I stopped, rolled down the window, got the camera, and put it on what I hoped would be the right settings for the shot. I then rolled very slowly forward, knowing from experience that the deer are much less skittish with a car than a person on foot. (They instinctively perceive a human as a potential threat, but a car doesn't trigger that instinct in quite the same way, or to the same degree.) She was munching on new grass, and I rolled right up to her, holding the camera, finger on the button. When I stopped, she was perhaps eight or ten feet (three meters) away. She lifted her head up, and I snapped the pic. In a moment, her instinct kicked in, and she bounded a little ways away with her friends. This was the only picture I got of her this close.
> StuckInTheSixties says February 05: For the last week and a half or so, there have been lots of deer around every day, sometimes as many as a dozen, or more. I've been taking lots of photos, some of which I posted here in the Gallery last week. I've got dozens more, from which I'll extract the best and post them in a blog in the near future.

> StuckInTheSixties says February 13: I like her shiny nose.

Picture #02: This is how the ice cube somehow formed (#1 of two)
> StuckInTheSixties says February 12: Why would an ice cube form that way?
> lumu81 says February 12: awwwww, it's happy to see you sitsy
> Karma says February 12: "Ice spikes grow as the water in an ice cube tray turns to ice. The water first freezes on the top surface, around the edges of what will become the ice cube. The ice slowly freezes in from the edges, until just a small hole is left unfrozen in the surface. At the same time, while the surface is freezing, more ice starts to form around the sides of the cube.
Since ice expands as it freezes, the ice freezing below the surface starts to push water up through the hole in the surface ice (see diagram). If the conditions are just right, then water will be forced out of the hole in the ice and it will freeze into an ice spike, a bit like lava pouring out of a hole in the ground to makes a volcano. But water does not flow down the sides of a thin spike, so in that way it is different from a volcano. Rather, the water freezes around the rim of the tube, and thus adds to its length. The spike can continue growing taller until all the water freezes, cutting off the supply, or until the tube freezes shut. The tallest spike we've seen growing in an ordinary ice cube tray was 56mm (2.2in) long."

> StuckInTheSixties says February 12: I ask, I receive.
> SillyLaura says February 13: A couple weeks ago my husband was wondering the same thing about our ice trays with expanding cubes. Definitely will show him this!.. Thanks Skunkman & Karma

Picture #03: This is how the ice cube somehow formed (#2 of two)
SABLES says February 12: playing with the ice again Sits
> StuckInTheSixties says February 12: Dirty minded as I am, I was actually really curious as to what sort of physical ( as in "physics" ) causation would lead to an ice cube forming this way. Anyone know enough about physics or chemistry to tell me how this happened?
> StolenHeart says February 12: that is definitely interesting
> StuckInTheSixties says February 12: Oh wow! The lower right ice cube DOES have a peace sign. It's still in the fridge. Lemme run and see if it's still there!
> StuckInTheSixties says February 12: The peace sign disappeared.
> StuckInTheSixties says February 22: Actually, it remained like that in my freezer for at least a month. I finally decided to take a picture of it.

> SillyLaura says March 13: that's gotta be a bad omen having a vulture sitting on your post
> SillyLaura says March 13: ever see a hawk attack a squirrel? I have, TWICE! a hawk flew over my car as I was driving carrying a squirrel and saw a hawk dive into my backyard and sna+ch a squirrel up...all that was left was some fur
> StuckInTheSixties says March 13: Actually, those Turkey Vultures are VERY common around here, and highly valued as Nature's Clean-up Crew. And I've posted many photos of them here in Wireclub. Usually they're hanging around in large groups. I've been sitting here in my house, and suddenly notice some little sounds up above the ceiling. I'll go outside, look up, and sure enough, there's one or two dozen buzzards sitting up on my roof warming themselves in the morning sun, their wings spread out to catch the sun, etc. They look creepy as hell, but they're really cool animals.

Here's some blogs of mine where you'll find more (better) pictures of these guys:

I don't think I've ever seen a hawk after a squirrel, but I've seen them after voles, field mice, etc. I see that all the time. We have Kestrels around here, too. They're my favorite bird of prey around here.

Picture #19: Blacktailed Deer (#3 of five)
> StolenHeart says April 03: nice shot. Deer are such beautiful, graceful creatures
> StuckInTheSixties says April 03: I had stepped out my front door, turned to walk out to the car, and she was right outside my house. I startled her. I quickly slipped back inside and grabbed the camera. She was circling around my house, crossing the property, and passing right between where I usually shoot the "Weekly Photo From My Porch" and the neighbors' vineyard beyond, and I was thinking how cool it would be if I could get a version of that shot with a deer in it. I silently slipped the sliding glass door leading out onto the porch open, only a couple of inches, to take the shot, and as she was slowly making her way past the house, I had time to think that it would make the perfect photo if I she would stop right at just the right place, and look into the camera. When she got right to that spot, I made a little "Psst!" sound to get her to turn her head to me, but instead, she was still skitish from our little encounter a minute or two earlier, and she instantly bounded away.
> SABLES says April 05: lol they are so beautiful

Around Napa Valley XIV

These are photos that I took around Napa Valley, where I live. They were originally posted in my Picture Gallery, and then as space ran out, I moved them over here to this blog rather than simply deleting them in lieu of new pictures. The photos were taken during a period from August 23, 2010 to April 17, 2011. (Most were taken in February and March.) The comments shown below originally were attached when they were posted in the gallery. In some cases, the comments are disjointed. This is because as people delete their Wireclub accounts, their comments leave with them.

Picture #01: Aftermath of a Traffic Collision (#1 of four)
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: This KIA, driven by a distracted 20 year-old girl, rammed me from behind when I was stopping for traffic in front of me. She tried to stop, and tried to miss me by pulling to the right, but she hit me, and pushed me into the vehicle in front of me.
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: She damaged my car FAR more than she damaged her own. Luckily, she was fully insured. I didn't have to pay a dime, but now, if I ever want to sell my Toyota, I can't truthfully say that it's never been in a collision.
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: Bugga indeed!

Picture #02: Aftermath of a Traffic Collision (#2 of four)
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: Here's the damage she caused the rear of my poor Corolla. Note my wallet (containing my driver's license), my camera case, the blue envelope that contains my vehicle registration and proof of insurance, and a pen sitting on the car. I had been exchanging all of the vital information with her.
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: Her front driver's side hit my rear passenger side. After she hit me, my front driver's side hit the rear passenger side of the pickup in front of me. Oh, and I forgot to note earlier, and as I heard the sound of her skidding behing me, I instinctively tried to steer towards the right, trying to get out of her way or whatever. It was an instinctive act, and it might have actually put me right where she was trying go to avoid hitting me.
> SABLES says October 04: so many factors you can't always predict...
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: Isn't someone going to make a dirty joke about being "rear ended"?
> shells333 says October 10: Just glad you are OK.

Picture #03: Aftermath of a Traffic Collision (#3 of four)
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: She pushed me into a pickup truck that was stopped in front of me. It had no damage at all, but look at my poor crunched up Corolla!
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: It cost a LOT of money to fix, Sebby. It didn't cost me, but the bill was a big one. Cars are designed to "crumple" to absorb energy in a collision. Helps to keep you from getting hurt, but it really increases the repair bill.
> SABLES says October 04
yep it is amazing.. the front bumper and the clamps that hold it on can be a really easy 1500.00 bill here in Canada, never mind fixing the hood and your rear...
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: Ironically, some good did come of this. A bit over a year ago, while I was parked in a parking lot at my bank, I emerged from the bank and found that some careless driver had brushed their car against the front bumper of mine, scraping some paint off. They didn't stick around to take responsibility, and I was stuck with the result, which I blogged about it here, and posted a photo.

http://www.wireclub.com/Galleries/ViewImage.aspx?ImageId=1280870

(If you compare photos, you can see in the above photo where the previous damage is.) The repair on that little scrape would have run over $600. My insurance policy, like most people's, has a $500 deductible. So rather than shelling out that money, I just decided to live with it. So after a year of grumbling to myself every time I looked at that place on my car, it's been fixed along with the other damage.

Picture #04: Aftermath of a Traffic Collision (#4 of four)

> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: Here's the tire marks she left on the roadway as she skidded into me. You can see how she was attempting to pull to the right and miss me, but in the process of locking up her brakes, she lost her ability to steer.
> Musician says October 04: ........She lost the ability to steer...Are you saying before locking up the brakes she actually had the ability to steer? The steering wheel is a big circular device infront of you while you drive; A 20 year old girl that pestered her daddy to buy her a KIA could easily miss this slight hitch of enormous importance.
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: It was just one of those things, a very common traffic collision. She was driving, and her boyfriend was the passenger. She wasn't paying enough attention, and when she realized that traffic was stopped in front of her, it was too late. Perhaps if she had anti-lock brakes like my Corolla, she would have been able to stop in time, or would have had more ability to maneuver while braking. I love those anti-lock brakes. They've saved me before.
> Musician says October 04: I've been in 2 of those now, as a passenger, big bumps and a bit of whiplash in one but nothing too serious. Not done it myself fortunately.
> SABLES says October 04: yes abs brakes are great...save you from locking and skidding into another vehicle...but she did the right thing by trying to miss the traffic, just both of you had the same idea...lol you needed to speed up a bit for her to have not hit
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: Difficult to do with a pickup truck right in front of me. (shrugs)
> StuckInTheSixties says October 04: Hahaha! I was waiting for you to say that!
> WittyPup says October 06: I'm glad no one was hurt.
> StuckInTheSixties says October 07: It wasn't a hard enough hit to even trigger the airbags. Just a typical fender-bender.
> Musician says October 15: I wanted to say "wrong side of the road" too but I'm living in Spain now, which is also a right handed country (talking about the roads not the political system)

Picture #05: This rain-swollen creek on Atlas Peak would normally be only a trickle

> Morsy says February 28: Tacky way to do it

Picture #07: Goats (#1 of three)

> Morsy says February 28: Evil!!! No way....
> SABLES says February 28: they are adorable but their eyes freak me out
> Karma says February 28
> MissCellaneous says February 28: Freddy is right. They are evil.
> StuckInTheSixties says February 28: Look at their hypnotic evil eyes ... LOOK AT THEM !!!!!!!!!!!!! *whispers* Satan!
> MissCellaneous says February 28: We had a pet goat named Nikki, cause she looked like Santa, as in St Nick... She was evil and hated all of us except Mum. But whenever we tried to show Mum how evil she was, and how she chased us, and headbutted us and kicked us... she'd play all sooky and nice again while Mum was looking. Evil. She eventually ate some plant she wasn't meant to, and she got gas and blew up (yes, really) which I actually think was cosmic justice.
> StuckInTheSixties says February 28: (laughs hysterically) Damn! I'd pay to see that! Ka-bloooie!
> StolenHeart says February 28: Great shot...I'm reminded of an episode of Little House on the Prairie, called "fred" Fred the goat liked to butt people in the arse
> StuckInTheSixties says February 28: The goats are pretty cool, but it's not really a good picture compositionally. The problem is that yellow rope. It really lessens the composition. (I'm shedding light on how my thought process works with my photos.)

Picture #08: Goats (#2 of three)
> Morsy says February 28: Excellent clear photo and goats are cute too

Picture #09: Goats (#3 of three)
> StuckInTheSixties says February 28
I'd been driving past these two goats (often penned in with the horse shown several pictures above) for quite a while, and I thought I'd stop and take some pictures of them. They were just standing there, doing nothing, but the moment I approached, they both suddenly became fascinated with that yellow rope. They started playing with it, nuzzling it, flipping it with their noses, rubbing on it, pushing against it, wrapping their neck around it (as you see above), etc. Somehow, my presence seemed to cause them to begin playing with it.

Picture #15: Fields of wild Mustard and a ridge just south of Napa (#3 of four)
> Karma says March 27: This is the actual plant that mustard seeds come from?
> StuckInTheSixties says March 27: Doubtful, though I'm not really sure. This is wild, just weeds. It grows everywhere around here, but there's no industry for harvesting it or anything like that. So that suggests to me that it's a variety of the plant that's not of any value that way.

Picture #16: Fields of wild Mustard and a ridge just south of Napa (#4 of four)

> StuckInTheSixties says March 07: Oh! I just noticed! If you'll examine the text of his "About Me" message, you'll see that he claims to be "1 OF A FEW SUPREME COMMANDERS OF THE FREEDOM WARRIORS." And if you'll click "Next" and examine the next picture, you'll see that he mentions that there are two other "Supreme Commanders” … okay. It's clear now … There are three of these knuckleheads playing army with each other, and pretending that they have an imaginary militia. By the way, how can three different guys each be "supreme"? Various Previously Posted Pictures IV

As my Picture Gallery fills up and nears or reaches the maximum of two hundred images, rather than simply deleting older pictures in lieu of newer ones, I shift them over here to reside in blogs. This is a collection of various pictures and photos that don’t really fit in any of the specific categories I otherwise use in these blogs. Except for the five pictures taken on Mt. Tamalpais in August 2009, these pictures date from July 26, 2010 to May 8, 2011. (Note: A copy of Picture #05 remains in my picture gallery as part of the small number of pictures there that remain there, rather than being moved, just because I’m fond of them. Normally, it would just remain there, as a few others do, but in this case, since it’s part of a group of five moved here to this blog, it now resides in both places.)

I’ve also included the comments that were attached to them. Some of these comments will seem a bit disjointed because the continuity between comments has been interrupted as the people who left them deleted their accounts, taking the comments with them.

Picture #01: The Marine Layer rolls in over southern Marin County (#1 of five)
> StuckInTheSixties says August 13: I was chatting with Zhya about the weather, and I mentioned the "Marine Layer" phenomenon we have here in the San Francisco Bay Area. It's a thin, flat layer of clouds that develops over the ocean, and as the land cools off, this layer of clouds intrudes from the ocean into the inland areas. When it warms up, the Marine Layer retreats back out into the ocean again. It oscillates back and forth like this to varying degrees, day after day, during the summer.

When it's present, if you're under it, it just looks like overcast, like a dreary cloudy day. But if you ascend in altitude, like driving up a mountain road, you'll climb up into it, where it then becomes a thick, wet fog with very low visibility. And if you keep climbing, you'll pop out above it, and it will appear to be a flat, snow-white layer of clouds obscuring everything below it, with mountain tops protruding out like islands in a sea of cloud.

So I thought I'd find some photos to see if I could give Zhya a better idea of how it actually looks.

Picture #10: Getting a picture taken with Bela Fleck, my favorite living musician (#4 of five)
> StolenHeart says December 18: yup, he's pointing to the hamster turd still stuck in there
> StuckInTheSixties says December 18: Bela and his bandmates are really generous with their fans. They almost always come out after the show, hang around signing autographs, chatting, letting people get pictures, etc. Have you ever met someone who is absolutely, without question, the best that ever lived at doing something? He's the best banjo player ever to walk on Earth. No one even comes close. When he appeared on the music scene a bit over thirty years ago, he simply revolutionized what could be done with the instrument. Not only that, but he's an amazing composer, and writes all kinds of super-complex compositions. Plays in every style of music imaginable. He just seems to be able to do everything.
> StuckInTheSixties says December 18: Over the years, I've met other famous musicians that I really admired, but for some reason, with Bela, I get completely tongue-tied and can only manage to sound like a total dork while saying profundities like, "Hey, I really like your music!" or "Wow, you guys are really great ..."
> SABLES says December 18: that is cool!
> _Safira_ says December 19: OooOOOhhhh I lurveeeee the banjo!! One day, (procrastinating) I'm going to learn to play it. Thanks for the heads up on a great player(cute one too at that)...off to google him now You look quite pleased with yourself too I might add lol
> StuckInTheSixties says December 19: He plays banjo like nothing you've ever heard. He plays Bach and Paganini. He plays Miles Davis. He plays the Beatles. He plays, of course, all sorts of traditional bluegrass. One of the highlights of this "Christmas Show" they did was to play "The Twelve Days of Christmas" ... not that big of a deal ... until you consider that they played each "day" in a different key, and in a different time signature. Think of how that song goes, as each verse gets longer and longer as it counts back down to "and a partridge in a pear tree." The last verse was played, as said, in twelve different keys, and in twelve different key signatures. I'm amazed just that they could remember it all. Seriously, YouTube "Bela Fleck" and you'll be AMAZED at what this guy is capable of.
> Karma says December 22:
> Babycool says December 28: Omg, hes georgous, no wonder you adore him...hehe I will definitely be listening to this guy, I really appreciate good talent. I also trust your passion for music.
> StuckInTheSixties says December 28: I have pretty weird taste in music. I lean towards stuff that's complex, and technically demanding. My taste in music would likely drive you from the room. But Bela writes some really good compositions, and you'd have to be a moron not to have some sort of appreciation of his virtuoso technical abilities.

Picture #13: Near Steamboat Slough in Southern Sonoma County (#1 of two)
> SABLES says August 02: another nice shot SIts

Picture #14: Near Steamboat Slough in Southern Sonoma County (close-up) (#2 of two)
>Karma says August 02: Steamboat? Is it in fact an estuary that leads to a river and was used for harboring a steamboat?
> StuckInTheSixties says August 02: This is in an area of wetlands at the north end of San Pablo Bay, between the mouths of the Napa River to the east, and the Petaluma River to the west. If you Google Maps this area, you can see that various little parts of that larger area have names.

I may have carelessly and incorrectly named this as Steamboat Slough. It's right in the area, and looks like it's semi-connected, but the submerged fence certainly suggests that it wasn't ever a navigable body of water. You can clearly see a levee there too, so it appears as if that area was, at one time, protected by levees and farmed. The entire area has undergone all sorts of changes for agriculture before finally being set aside as valued wetlands. And a second examination of the map seems to suggest that Steamboat Slough is actually an adjacent small waterway that looks as if it's navigable.

Part of the problem here is that the word "slough" has several meanings, and I think you're considering one while I wrote that caption considering another. My Encarta Dictionary - English (North America) gives one definition as "a saltwater estuary." It gives another as "a stagnant area of water connected to a larger body of water such as a marsh, inlet, bayou, or backwater." This is what I was thinking when I looked at Google Maps, found that designation, and wrote the caption. I also think I may have been drawing on my memories of when my family first moved to this area, and for a few months, we lived on the (now former) Mare Island Naval Shipyard, right at the mouth of the Napa River. And I remember from then that the entire area was commonly referred to as "the sloughs."

So I'm going to be safe here and edit that caption by adding the word "near."

> StuckInTheSixties says August 02: If you're curious enough to go to Google Maps and look at this area, you can quickly find it by searching "Sonoma Valley Airport, Sonoma, CA." Steamboat Slough is almost directly to the west of that. If you zoom outward a click or two to where the map shows a distance scale (in the lower left corner of the map) of 1 mile/kilometer, you can see all of the details that go into this situation, and my photograph.

Just below Steamboat Slough, you'll see a long, straight, slender line of water. This is what I photographed. And if you follow that line to the right to Ramal Road, that is where I stood to make the photo.

Picture #16: Size comparison: Fukushima Plant (L)/Three Mile Island Plant (R)
> StuckInTheSixties says March 18: The separate reactors are numbered in yellow. All four of the reactors in the Fukushima plant are damaged. There are also two other reactors, beyond the top edge of the picture, that are also damaged. The partial melt-down occurred in the number 2 reactor in the Three Mile Island plant. The number 1 reactor was undamaged, and is still generating electricity.
> Morsy says March 19: Interesting to see thanks
> StuckInTheSixties says March 19: I put together this picture because Malo was wondering about the relative size of the reactors of the two plants. Of course, any discussion about the situation in Japan is likely to harken to Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. Malo, in a Forum thread, had voiced an impression he had that the Fukushima plant was much smaller than Three Mile Island. So, with the aid of Google Maps, I made side by side pictures, with identical scale, to make a comparison.

I came across:

On that website is a program that allows any dork like me to create "works of art" just like those. Hence my question "... but is it really art?"

Great Blue Heron - A Terror To Small Rodents (Photo Essay)

Every year, as the rainy season comes to an end, I have Pete, the tractor guy, come out and mow the some of the high grass and weeds on my property. It's a fire prevention measure. This year, as Pete was at work, a Great Blue Heron arrived on the scene, and immediately began stalking around, looking for anything small to eat that had been uncovered in newly mowed vegetation.

Over the course of several days, the big bird returned a number of times, and continued feasting on whatever it could find. I figure I actually watched it, and photographed it, for maybe 5 percent of the time it was here. During that time, I saw it eat dozens of mice, a bunch of larger rats, and at least one small Gopher Snake. Often, I could tell it caught and ate something, although it was too far away to see just what the unlucky prey was.

It's really cool watching it hunt. It very slowly and carefully, taking slow-motion, very deliberate steps, moves around, intently studying the ground, looking for any signs of movement in the grass. When it sees movement, it zeroes in on that spot, leaning over, with it's long neck pulled back into an "S" shape. It very, very slowly leans in getting it's long, sharp beak closer to the target area, and when the prey moves again, the bird's head flashes forward like an arrow, and it snatches up the unfortunate victim. It then gives it a couple of vigorous shakes, perhaps to stun it. Occasionally, it'll actually drop the prey back on the ground and quickly grab it again, perhaps getting it positioned slightly better in it's beak. The the head goes up, the beak opens, and down the gullet the victim goes, swallowed whole.

Eye Candy For Car Freaks #9

I was buying some groceries the other day and came across this "410 Sprint Car" in the parking lot of the shopping center. It was sitting on its trailer, and I noticed someone sitting in the truck hitched to it. I decided to ask the person if they would mind me taking pictures of the vehicle, and Marie, the transport driver for the race team, was more than gracious enough to let me take photos, and even agreed to pose for one.
