Super Esquire: The seer stone was, allegedly, a pedagogical aid that helped Smith understand and translate foreign language characters.

Super Esquire: Smith was reported to having put the stone in a dark hat so that he could read from the stone more readily when the stone illuminated up. I suspect that the stone's reputation had more to do with Smith's spiritual talents as a seer, than any chemical properties of the stone itself.

Super Esquire: The stone was a tabula rasa of sorts for God to write on, to give Smith something in front of him to process, as opposed to words just lighting up in his minds eye. The foreign characters would appear and the english words would appear beneath them.

After long breaks, his scribes reported, Joseph Smith would sit down and look into his hat, and read exactly where they stopped off. It was marvelous to his scribes, because he didn't need the scribes to refresh his memory of the context of where they were at. He just restarted reading the characters cold turkey where they had left off.

Super Esquire: Some skeptics have suspected witchcraft at work, but if you read the book of mormon, the product of a notedly short, 3 month translation process, it is an intensely pious, and quite conservative book.

Super Esquire: This river stone was not the urim and thummim, referenced in the bible, another type of seer stone that Smith also used, which we have no know knowledge of where it is. If the church has it in their possession, we do not know.

Super Esquire: Exodus 28:30
Insert the Urim and Thummim into the sacred chest piece so they will be carried over Aaron’s heart when he goes into the Lord’s presence. In this way, Aaron will always carry over his heart the objects used to determine the Lord’s will for his people whenever he goes in before the Lord. (NLT)

Ezra 2:63
And the governor said to them that they should not eat of the most holy things till a priest could consult with the Urim and Thummim. (NKJV)

Super Esquire: Lisbail, from the various descriptions we have, it seems the breast plate was a means of protecting and supporting the function of the urim and thummim. The u and t could be attached to the breastplate for glass viewing purposes, and shield by the breastplate, for protection purposes.

With the modern day moses Smith, Joseph Smith described the revelatory process of entering gods presence as physically draining, and it seems like the urim and thummim helped joseph smith endure the prolonged revelatory process needed to translate the BoM. Smith had to sit there for 6 or 7 hours a day, translating the book of mormon (bom), receiving revelatory guidance the whole way. Without the urim and thimmim, apart from the pedagogical guidance it gave him, Smith might not have been physically capable of completing the translation of the bom without having urim and thummim, "internet device" open so that he could easily look into, for a pedagogical and spiritual support.
